Amazing haul of medals for Arun girls at Southbourne

Girls from Arun Gymnastics Club ended their competitive year on a real high with sparkling performances at the Southbourne invitational beam and vault competition, where they ended up with an amazing haul of 34 medals.

Competing in round one at level one were some of Arun’s youngest gymnasts. Six-year-olds Katie Spicer, Libby Morton and Grace Markey put in high-scoring performances on the beam that saw Libby win her first gold, Grace silver and Katie bronze. In the vaults Katie was fourth, Grace fifth and Libby seventh, so in the overall competition Libby was the winner, Grace runner-up and Katie third.

Eight-year-olds Lucy Ansell, Megan Tanswell and Amelia Rishman also did well. Amelia took a clean sweep of golds in the beam and vault. Megan won silver on beam and bronze on vault to gain the overall silver and Lucy ended eighth.

In round two Arun had gymnasts competing in four categories. At level two for gymnasts born between 1995 and 1997, Charlotte Williamson (13) started with an impressive clean sweep of gold medals.

The medal haul continued with Ashley Bingham, competing at level two for 12-year-olds. An excellent vault won gold and her beam meant she took overall silver. Also at level two in round two was Daisy Donoghue in the seven and eight-year-old category. Despite a good showing on vault and beam, she couldn’t quite manage a medal.

Connie Styles, Molly Evans and Imogen Latter were competing at level one for seven-year-olds and did superbly well.

Molly ended the day with three medals including overall gold, which she won with Arun’s highest overall total of 14.10. She also took silver on beam and vault.

Connie earned gold for beam and fourth place on vault to clinch silver overall. Imogen took gold on vault and was fourth overall.

Round three saw Arun represented by Sophie Haines and Rebecca Williamson. Rebecca won silver for beam and was third on vault for overall silver. Sophie was seventh overall.

In the level two competition for nine-year-olds, Arun were represented by sisters Caitlyn and Betsy Baird, Chloe Golding and Amelia Freeman.

On beam, Caitlyn earned silver. Betsy finished fourth with Chloe tenth and Amelia 11th. On vault Betsy was fifth followed by Caitlyn in sixth, Chloe sevenh and Amelia eighth.

Overall, Caitlyn came away with the bronze with Betsy narrowly missing out on a medal

At level twofor ten-year-olds Arun achieved their hat-trick of clean sweeps thanks to Emily Day.

Her graceful routine on beam earning her first place and it was the same story with the highest-scoring Arun vault of the day. Overall she was well ahead of her rivals.

Rebecca Roberts finished overall seventh after a fourth on the beam.

Arun’s last gymnast to compete at level one was 11-year-old Jasmine Green. She started with a superb performance on vault to win silver then improved on it with a gold-winning beam routine - enough to secure overall gold and take her edal tally to three.

The final medal tally for Arun was 17 golds, 12 silvers and five bronzes, a superb effort from the girls and a fantastic end to a very impressive year.

Their final event of 2010 comes this Sunday – their Christmas display at Arun Leisure Centre, starting at 4pm.
