Angmering trainer earns widespread respect

He has also earned widespread respect by the way he has steadily built up an increasingly strong team of horses in his yard, with better quality runners achieving a rising number of victories each season.

He came to his base at Angmering Park in 2006 as a new trainer, but with a wealth of experience accrued as assistant trainer to John Hills and Ed Dunlop.

Stable star Illustrious Blue, owned locally by Ian and Pam Bendelow of Rustington, has been with him from the start, winning Listed events, a valuable race in Dubai and finishing third in the All Weather Derby with the latest Group race the icing on his cake.

But there are also plenty of up and coming horses in the yard, reflecting William's determination to improve.

He said: "My aim is to continue not only to train winners, but to constantly upgrade the quality and quantity of my horses so that they win better races.

"I have been lucky to be able to move forward with my training facilities and now have three good inter-linked yards, enabling me to segregate fillies from colts and young horses from older ones.

"I am really pleased with the way things have gone since I started training. I now have around 50 horses, including 25 two-year-olds, which is a good total and I am able to go to the sales with orders for better quality horses.

"Last year I went to Keeneland, Goffs and Tattersalls with orders in my pocket and bought some good horses."
