Arun gymnasts shine among Sussex, Surrey and Kent’s finest

EIGHTEEN members of Arun Gymnastics Club made a successful trip to Guildford to represent the club at the south-east regional floor and vault competition attended by gymnasts from across Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

Gymnasts compete in various age and difficulty categories with the amount of their weekly training hours also taken into consideration and with medals and rosettes awarded for overall position, the Arun gymnasts acquitted themselves admirably – winning a total of seven medals and six rosettes.

There were four silver medals won by the club and these came from Rebecca Williamson, who was placed second on floor and third on vault in her category; Sophie Haines, first on vault and second on floor; Olivia Hepburn, second on floor and vault, and Jordan Kitchen, competing in her last gymnastics competition and who was second on floor and vault.

Bronze medals were won by Millie Watkins, second on vault; Lucy Stephenson-Gill, second on floor and vault, and Lucy Woolmer, second on vault and fourth on floor.

Rosettes were awarded for positions four to six and Arun’s Rosie Budge, third on vault, and Chantal Mawbey both won fourth-place rosettes for their categories. Brooklyn Smith, second on her vault, Lily Smyth and Olivia Baggott each earned fifth-place rosettes and Eva Rennie, third on vault, won a sixth-place rosette.

Other notable Arun performances came from Olivia Bricker, who broke her thumb during her floor routine and still managed to finish her competition in overall seventh; Emily Day, who also finished overall seventh, and Emilia Grochala, who placed second on floor in her category.

There is also a qualifying score that has to be reached to enable a gymnast to move up to the next difficulty category and Rebecca Williamson, Sophie Haines, Millie Watkins and Rosie Budge all achieved these.

Coaches Carolyn Millar and Tracey Angell were delighted with the level of commitment shown by all the gymnasts and extremely encouraged by the results.
