Arundel 10k race

THIS race has been a component of the Arundel Festival festivities for more than 25 years and is held on the Sunday prior to the late August Bank Holiday each year.

For the first 20 years it was a road race around the town, but increasing safety and marshalling issues prompted us to restrict the distance on public roads to 1km at the start and finish, with the rest of the course passing through the grounds of Arundel Castle and Park.

While this change has reduced the numbers of spectators around the course, the advantages that it brings in terms of stunning scenery and, to my knowledge, the only 10k which takes you through the courtyard of a Castle more than make up for this.

It also means that the atmosphere at the start and end is terrific. The 2009 event will be the tenth running over the current course.

The course is challenging (hilly) with short sharp uphill sections of around 45m between 1-2km and 7-8km and a long steady climb of 80m between 3-5km.

These are offset by downhill stretches between 5-7km and 9-10km. The first 5.5 km and last 1km are on tarmac roads/paths with the remainder being on grass or gravel downland tracks.

The event saw regularly attracts fields in excess of 500 runners of all standards. Course records are: Men under 40 (James Baker in 2003 - 33:02), Women over 35 (Jane Harrop in 2003 - 39:50), Women under 35 (Emily Nelson in 2006 - 39:36) and Men over 40 (Keith Newton in 2004 - 34:04).
