Attempts of boosting the Mirfield and Gullick Cup competitions back to their '˜glory days' have seen the much-loved tournaments given a revamp.

New rules have been put in place to give the knockout matches a new-look in an attempt to attract more teams and players.

The midweek T20 competitions are open to all Horsham district teams - both aimed at a specific player level - and the finals are played at Cricketfield Road in July.

The Mirfield Cup was founded by late Horsham Cricket Club president Dr John Dew more than 50 years ago and named after early Horsham CC president Frank Mirfield.

Revised entry rules mean that the competition is now open to all clubs with no player restrictions whatsoever.

In the past Sussex League Premier Division clubs were unable to enter, as were overseas players, but these restrictions have been scrapped for 2016.

The Gullick Cup is aimed at non-cricketers that want to get involved in the sport or those playing at a lower level.

Organisers are keen to hear from pubs, clubs, businesses, colleges or any non-regular cricketers.

Sussex Cricket League players and West Sussex Invitation League Division 1 players are not allowed to feature.

Organiser Chris Shambrook is hoping to drum up more interest in both competitions this season.

He said: “With the world T20s looming what better way than to get involved by playing in our own local tournament?

“The Mirfield Cup could have been the original T20 cup dating back over 50 years and this year we are looking to increase participants back to its glory days.

“Whether you are budding Ben Stokes or just someone who wants to have whack we can cater for all.

“So if you are a local club or pub wanting to get involved or an individual looking for a team get in touch.”

As a further incentive to get involved, there is no requirement of teams that are entering to have a ground to play at, that can be arranged by the organisers.
