Bognor darts aces enjoy another knockout night

Four Bognor Friday Night Benevolent League knockouts took place at Newtown Social Club on one night, with 74 players involved.

First up was the ladies knockout with 16 players competing.

In the semi-finals three time champion Julie English (Friary C) beat Maureen Dempsey (POW ‘B’) while Hayley Gatford (Hunston Club) made her ninth straight ladies’ final, beating Anita Puncule (Jacks Jokers).

The final’s first leg saw Gatford sneaking the double one with her last dart to take the leg. The second leg saw English hit back to make it 1-1.

The last leg was close before Gatford stepped up and hit single four and double two to take her sixth Benevolent League ladies’ knockout title.

The over-60s’ knockout saw 20 take part and in the semis Peter Hall (Chi Snooker ‘A’) lost to Buster Barton (Squash Club) and Richard Pennells (Jacks Jokers) beat four-time champion Roger Hackett (Squash Club).

The final saw Pennells struggle to find many big scores in the first leg as Barton finished it in 19 darts. The second leg saw Pennells hit scores of 100 and 125, but Barton saw off the leg in 26 darts to become this years over-60s’ knockout champion.

The secretaries knockout saw 20 players step up to the oche, a record for the event. The first semi-final saw Simon Edwards (POW ‘B’) defeat Pat O’Hara (Chi Snooker ‘A’) while the second saw Dave Bourne (Four Chesnuts) lost to Lee Franklin (POW ‘Z’).

The first leg of the final went to Franklin and in the second leg, Franklin found double two to take the title.

The captains’ knockout saw 18 players turn up, another record turnout. The semis featured Roger Hackett (Squash Club) bowing out to Gary Blackwood (Claremont) and Mark R Todd (BRSA Ravens) overcoming Lewis Campling (Newtown ‘X’).

In the final, Todd started slowly in the first leg and Blackwood finished it in 18 darts.

The second leg began with a Blackwood ton but Todd caught up with a 140. Todd was in contention but Blackwood needed two darts to take the leg and the win to become this years captain’s knockout champion.

WEEK 21’s best game was played by Micky Rowland (Squash Club) with 17 and 23 darts and a 25.05 average.
