Bognor golf ace hopes tournament win is first of many

Bognor's Oliver Turnill is eyeing up a shot at the big-time after notching his tournement win as a professional.

The 24-year-old won one of the events on this year’s 66 Pro Tour as he was successful in a late bid to qualify for the tour’s championship final.

His triumph at Liphook in Hampshire came in a run of three rounds of the tour in which he impressed to make the final at Walton Heath in Surrey, despite having missed the first dozen rounds.

Sadly Turnill couldn’t repeat his heroics in the Sky-televised final, finishing one over par with a score of 73 – eight behind winner Lawrence Dodd.

But the whole experience has fired Turnill’s determination to go on climbing the golf ladder.

“I only played in the three events before the final because I’d been away playing the Challenge Tour and Euro Pro, so I did well to get through.

“But I wasn’t too hot on the day. Conditions were horrendous in the morning with lots of wind and rain, but at least I was there.”

Turnill has played golf at the Bognor club since he was nine and turned pro in 2008. Now he aims to chalk up more tournament wins.

“My plan is to make it to the big-time, play in all the majors and so on. It will be a lot of hard work but that’s my aim.”

Turnill, who has attracted sponsorship from Glenmuir Clothing, hopes for a long spell in the USA next year and with that in mind is staging a golf day at Bognor on Friday, December 3.

It’s an open invite and competitors can pay their fee and put themselves in with a chance of a share of Turnill’s earnings.
