Bognor join in squash’s effort to help refugees

Squash clubs throughout England are joining forces to raise money to help children caught up in the mass migration of refugees fleeing war zones in various parts of the world.

Bognor are one of many Sussex clubs taking part in World Squash Day on Saturday, October 10.

The idea is for squash clubs to hold open days to attract new players to the game and to raise funds to help Unicef, the world’s largest children’s organisation.

The project is supported by the World Squash Federation and England Squash and Racketball.

Clubs are encouraged to get their own junior players involved to raise awareness of the plight of millions of other children across the planet who are in danger and in desperate need of the kind of support supplied by Unicef.

English squash clubs aim to raise at least £50,000 by supporting the World Squash Day online giving page: www.justgiving.com/WorldSquashDay.

Bognor Squash & Racketball Club are throwing open their doors on the day from 11am to 4pm to anyone who wants to try their hand at squash and/or racketball.

No experience is necessary and all equipment provided, though you must have non-marking sports shoes.

Coaching staff and club members will be on hand to demonstrate and offer advice - refreshments will be provided, but we ask for a small donation to support UNICEF.

Bognor’s first team, in their opening home match, took on Chichester Racquets & Fitness but lost to old rivals in a close contest.

No5 string for Bognor was Steve Darlington and he had the longest match of the evening playing David Maclean. Darlington took a close first game but was just edged out in a nail-biting second. Another close game saw Maclean edge ahead and he closed out the tie in the fourth winning 7-9, 9-10, 9-7, 9-6.

Will Burley, the home No4, was up against Chris Earl and although he made a great effort to get back into the match in the third game, the visitor won 9-3, 9-3, 9-7.

Third-string Greg Jansz had a higher ranking than opponent Julian Standish but the Chichester player belied this, winning comfortably in straight games.

Things were looking ominous for the home team in terms of points but two old hands made the outcome more respectable.

Steve Porter at No2 made quick work of his match with Ed McCarthy, winning 9-2, 9-4, 9-2, then top string Glen Peskett had a good win against Justin Scott in a tussle with a rather bizarre scoreline.

Peskett took the first game to love but scored only one point in the second. He took the third to love and went on to take the match in the fourth game - final score 9-0, 1-9, 9-0, 9-6.

This gave Bognor seven points to Chichester’s 15.

The first team’s next fixture at Hawthorn Road is on Friday, November 6 against Horsham.
