Bognor squash aces end forgettable season a high point

Bognor Squash Club rounded off a season which was quite disappointing in the Sussex leagues with their annual competitions and finals night at Hawthorn Road.

The main events were again dominated by club No1 Steve Porter, who won the mens’ singles, squash doubles and racketball titles.

In the men’s event, Porter faced Steve Enfield, who competed athletically but had no answer to some of his opponent’s inch-perfect boasts and Porter won 9-5, 9-1, 9-4.

The ladies’ final also featured a re-run of previous years with Vicky Jarmaine comfortably retaining her title in straight games despite enthusiastic efforts from Gail Cuthbert.

The mens’ doubles produced some of the most competitive squash when favourites Steve Porter and Cliff Peach repeated last year’s triumph, this time against Steve Enfield and Paul Allen. A tightly-fought first game went to the holders 15-13 and they went on to take the next two games 15-8, 15-10.

The men’s plate featured Paul Glithero, who chased everything down against left-hander Andy Hanson in a good contest in which the first two games were very close – 9-7, 7-9.

Glithero proved the stronger as the match progressed taking the next two games 9-2, 9-4 and the trophy.

Porter played in his third final, in the handicap contest, and was undone by an opponent with a generous advantage from the handicapping system. Despite valiant efforts to reverse a 42-point deficit, Porter succumbed in a good contest to Steve Darlington, who fittingly won a trophy dedicated to his father Ron, a former player at the club.

The final competitive match was the veterans’, with Glithero taking on Paul Butcher in a match in which Glithero’s earlier efforts took their toll.

Butcher went into a two-love lead but Glithero pulled back the third game by the closest of margins - 10-9 - and the fourth was really a question of who could hang on, with Butcher just edging home 9-7 to complete an entertaining evening.

Porter won the racketball title, again against Steve Enfield, and the racketball doubles was won by Rod Everett and Colin Rogers who beat club chairman Chris Denyer and Bob Howes.
