Bognor squash stars are top dogs after beating Midhurst

The latest encounter at Hawthorn Road for Bognor's in-form first team was a hard-fought contest against a good Midhurst squad.

The latest encounter at Hawthorn Road for Bognor’s in-form first team was a hard-fought contest against a good Midhurst squad.

The home team had the edge when it mattered and recorded a 3-2 victory which took them to the top of Sussex division three west.

Dave Meagher was again in at No5 for Bognor and was unfortunate to lose by the odd game in five against Simon Milner, the score 9-10, 9-3, 9-6, 1-9, 6-9.

Bognor’s fourth string Pat Jones, making a welcome appearance, lost the first game to Paul Fairminer, but recovered well to level, then battled to take the decisive third game – the score 7-9, 9-5, 10-8, 9-3.

Bognor captain Steve Carruthers was also level at 1-1 against Dan Page and again the third game was tightly contested.

This time the visitor came out on top and Page went on to win 3-1.

Steve Enfield, Bognor No2, dropped the second game to Christian Brown but despite a good fight from the Midhurst player, Enfield was consistent enough to take the next two and the tie 3-1, with the score 9-3, 3-9, 9-7, 9-7.

No1 string for Bognor Steve Porter looked to be in trouble when he lost 9-1 in the first game to Jonathan Wright, but he came back strongly to take the next three 9-6, 9-6, 9-0 to secure win bonus points for the home team. Bognor took 17 points, Midhurst II nine.

The first team finish the first half of the season with trips to Littlehampton and Lancing, with the next Hawthorn Road match being the second team’s encounter with West Worthing tomorrow (7pm).
