Bolger beats the odds - and he's not alone at Fontwell

Colin Bolger was the toast of the track after guiding home Balustrade in the 2.40 at 50/1. That was a rare Fontwell success for Winchester trainer Chris Gordon, who quipped as he walked to the No1 post in the winner’s enclosure: “I’ve not stood here for a while.”

That followed Sussex jockey Joshua Moore’s success on 33/1 shot Swainson, trained by Helen Nelmes.

Elsewhere on the seven-race card, run in chilly conditions made more bearable by bright sunshine, the success was shared out with no jockey or trainer notching as much as a double.

The card was sponsored by Craig Roberts, who runs the Chancellor of the Formchecker website and is this year putting up hundreds of pounds in prize money for a Fontwell jockeys’ championship.

The meeting was tinged with sadness after the recent death of Chris Copsey, who was a regular parade ring host at the track. Chris, who was 52 and was a well-known voice on Sussex local radio stations, died after suffering a heart attack.
