Boom Or Bust aims for Betfred Mile repeat at Glorious Goodwood

A total of 70 entries have been received for the £125,000 Betfred Mile, the heritage handicap run on day four of Glorious Goodwood, Friday, August 3.

Trainer Marcus Tregoning has two entries headed by last year’s winner Boom And Bust (14/1 co third-favourite with Betfred), who had his first start since that front-running success in last month’s Royal Hunt Cup. He could bid to become the first dual winner of the very valuable Goodwood race, which was first run in 1987.

Tregoning has also entered the hugely progressive three-year-old Bronze Angel (20/1) was finished third in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot on June 21.

Tregoning, who trains at Kingswood House Stables in Lambourn, said: “Boom And Bust won the race last year and we would love to go back there with him again, while Bronze Angel is a rapidly improving three-year-old, so it’s possible both of them could run.

“With Boom And Bust it has been a target race for him as he appeared to act on the track last year and they normally get the ground right at Goodwood.

“He wasn’t quite right after last year’s race so I gave him a long break and he ran well for a long way in the Royal Hunt Cup (when 16th of the 30 runners).

“He is fine after his run at Ascot and I would think the Betfred Mile will be his next race.

“Bronze Angel looked a bit unlucky in the Britannia Handicap last time. He is very progressive and he is a pretty decent horse so it would be well worth running him in a race like the Betfred Mile.

“He is a horse I have always liked and he has continued to improve. I don’t know what heights he might scale but he is certainly going well.

“We’ve put the cheekpieces on him and they seem to have helped him travel in his races, but he has come on an enormous amount physically and it might just be that he is a lot stronger now. We will leave them on if he keeps running well.

“I think the track a Goodwood will be fine for him as he ran a very good race as a juvenile at the track when he was unlucky not to get a run up the inside rail.”

The 6/1 favourite with Betfred is the John Gosden-trained Trade Commissioner. The lightly-raced son of Montjeu was an impressive winner at Salisbury last time and looks a horse on the upgrade.

The entries also include Red Duke (20/1), trained by John Quinn, who won the Group Two Superlative Stakes at Newmarket nearly a year ago, before finishing an unlucky third in the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He disappointed in the Group Three Jersey Stakes last time, but had finished third in the German 2,000 Guineas prior to that.

Last month’s Royal Hunt Cup winner Prince Of Johanne (10/1) has been entered and could clash with Excellent Guest (14/1), Don’t Call Me (25/1), Field Of Dream (16/1) and Invisible Man (14/1), who filled the next four places behind Tom Tate’s charge at Royal Ascot. Prince Of Johanne also won the Betfred Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in 2011.

Charlie Hills may be represented by Newbury Spring Cup winner Captain Bertie (14/1), while David O’Meara has entered Smarty Socks (16/1).
