Bowls: Awesome foursome win county crown

After the round-robin games, the quarter-finals pitted Lavant against Horley and were always in control, running out 13-4 winners.

Southbourne played Bognor III with Bognor taking an early lead and winning 9-3; Southbourne II played Bognor II and again were always in control, winning 14-3.

The last quarter-final matched The Martlets against a team from last year’s winners, Infinity. This was a very tight game with Infinity taking three shots on the last end to tie the game. The Martlets won the extra end for an 8-7 victory.

In the semi-finals the Lavant four of Terry Haigh, Richard Stevens, Peter Winter and Peter Whale faced Bognor III team of Dennis Caiger, Peta Watters, Peter Watters and Brian Mills.

Lavant never managed to get going and Bognor won 11-1. In the second semi-final The Martlets four of Chris Blackman, Ben Haulkham, Marc Lancaster and Mel Lillywhite faced the Southbourne II team of Karen Alner, Dave Walter, Dave Alner and Andy Smith. The Martlets ran out comfortable winners 13-2.

In the final the Bognor four could not find their form of the semi-final and The Martlets had a comfortable win 16-5 to take the title.

Arun ladies travelled to Egham for a friendly and were narrowly beaten by seven shots.

Scores: I Brooker, P Rampton, P Jones & B Spicer lost 26-14; V Greenaway, K Burnard, E Lawrence & M Phillips won 28-9; J Foster, K Williams, M Bacon & C Bowles won 34-15; C Hobbs, J Boucher, C Ruler & L Hathaway lost 23-20; L Curtis, V Morris, R Weidenheoft & J Taffurelli lost 27-11; E Fitch, A Payne, S Stocker & G Conley lost 27-13.

The ladies went to Croydon and were winners by 16 shots, with one team obtaining a hot shot.

Seven teams from Crablands hosted their first charity triples tournament against seven team from Portsmouth North End in an enjoyable and successful day.

A combination of entry fees, cake sales, a raffle and fines for hitting the block contributed to a very respectable £380 being raised on the day for Breast Cancer Research. The charity was chosen as one of Crablands’ members is undergoing chemo.

The eventual winners were Russ Reeves, Janet Blackwell and Peter Blackwell (North End); runners-up were Meg Pocock, Wally Obermayer and Jim Saunders (Crablands).

Organiser Alan Foot said he hoped this would become a regular event at Crablands and hoped the publicity would encourage new members to the club.

DONNINGTON

Donnington played a friendly at home to Fittleworth.

Janine Bartlett, the Donnington captain, thanked Fittleworth captain Bernard Adsett and his teams for a good, close game. Donnington look forward to the return match at Fittleworth in January.

In a friendly away to Crablands, the hosts took the honours.

In a home league match, Lavant Red beat Horley Hawks.

Scores: P Winter, J Lee, M Winter and T Haigh won 21-15, R Harding, J Sharrod, P Beardmore and P Whale won 17-15.

MIDHURST

A well-attended Midhurst Bowls Club annual meeting was held in Cowdray Hall, Easebourne.

It was preceded by a short talk by representatives from Jarrath Cush, an investment company who presented club treasurer Malcolm Hutchings with a sponsorship cheque for £320.

Chairman Howard Seymour thanked the committee for their hard work last year and emphasised how much the standard of bowls had improved throughout the club.

Reaching the final of the Midhurst Cup was a fine achievement and a successful season in the Three Counties League was enjoyed by all who took part. The club will enter a second team in the league next year.

He explained some changes in the running of the club from 2018 – it will be run by sub-committees who will provide a

representatives to form the main committee.

Until now only the men have been affiliated to the Sussex Bowling Association, but from next season the ladies will also

be affiliated.

The treasurer reported said the club’s balance sheet showed a satisfactory income over expenditure but proposed an increase of £5 on the annual subscription and that a roll-up charge of £1 should be made.

After the resignation of president Mike Ryan for health reasons, vice-president Phil Wells steps up to president and the long-serving Jack Lee will become vice-president.
