At Camberley, 14-year-old Charley Mason was in action in the 54-57kg division of the National Cadet Championship contest between Sussex and Surrey.

His opponent Nathan Mizon from Mole Valley ABC came forward from the bell but was caught with counter-punches of quick southpaw lefts and rights from Mason, boxing off his back leg, winning him the first round.

Mason was hit low and after the ref gave him a count, he changed tactics and got drawn into a fight. He forgot his boxing and started trading blows with a strong boy and was caught with a combination of punches, one knocking him down and he was counted out by the ref.

At the Hedge End Club near Southampton, 11-year-old Darren Rowles was in action against Adam Barlow from Gemini Liverpool.

Barlow had won five out of five before this, Rowles had won three from three.

Rowles went forward for all three rounds punching in clusters of two-handed combinations of double jabs and right crosses only to hear the decision go to his opponent.

The contest was between two good juniors and his coach Charlie Martin said: “Darren took the decision on the chin and he was back in the gym training the next day.”
