Bognor's new pro boxer starts as he means to continue

ALEX GIBBONS made a winning start to his career as a professional boxer with an impressive victory at Hove Town Hall.

The orthodox puncher from Bognor made a quick start against experienced Ryan Clark, pinning the Lincolnshire super-middleweight on the ropes in the first round and keeping him under pressure with a strong left jab and an intelligent mixture of shots to the head and body.

Gibbons won each of the four three-minute rounds, maintaining his crisp, steady pace until the final bell.

The 27-year-old said: “It was a solid performance and I was very pleased with my fitness and my boxing.

“There’s plenty to work on and there’s room for improvement.

“I’m already back in training for a fight at the Liquid nightclub in Portsmouth on October 15 and I can’t wait. I want to step up a few levels.”

Gibbons is managed by Brighton-based Ronnie Davies, who steered Chris Eubank to world title success, and who said: “I’m very happy with Alex. It was an impressive debut.”

Gibbons had an impressive record as an amateur with 22 wins from 25 bouts on his way to a junior NABC title.

Co-trainer Faz Chitima said: “Alex hasn’t stepped into the ring for nearly two years and he’s worked extremely hard.

“He’s maintaining his busy training and fitness schedule and should find it easy to box at middleweight.’

Gibbons trains at VK’s Gym in Durban Road, Bognor, and thanked Peter Cox and Charlie Martin, plus Royal Marine John Murray, Paul Riley, of Salisbury Support, Revere Personal Training and his fans for all their backing.
