Chichester's big night of boxing takes shape

A BIG night of top-class boxing is on the cards in Chichester.

Saturday, January 26, sees St Gerards Amateur Boxing Club present their annual black-tie boxing evening at Westgate Leisure, hosted by the Rotary club of Chichester Priory.

The event will raise much-needed funds for St Gerards ABC and Chichester Boys’ Youth Club, helping them address anti-social behaviour in a very positive way.

Head coach of St Gerards Gareth Ferguson said: “Without such funding, the clubs would not survive in the current economic climate - the Rotary club of Chichester Priory are our saviours.”

Coach Jon Mills - known as The Terminator by the boxers because of the intense and painful circuits he pushes them through -said: “The lads are all extremely fit and have all gone that extra mile to perform to their best on the night - it should be truly awsome for all to witness.”

Matchmaker Gerry Lavelle is promising a cracking line-up for the night with some mouthwatering contests for the crowd and for special guests who will be supporting the night.

He said: “These include two open-class contests of the highest calibre - and the return of my youngest son Billy Lavelle to the amateur code should be a cracker as well.

“We have heavyweight junior Will Atha making his mark again and a very special start to the night with Wee Will Middleton making his amateur debut. He is aged 12 and weighing just 37kg, providing a taste of what’s to come.

“We also have seniors Chris James, Mark Chandler, Daniel Grant, Xavier Southerton, while making their debuts are seniors Germaine Malcolm and Laurence Houari - and to top it all off, pugilistic policeman Pete Outen will be in action.”

Nearly all 26 tables of ten have sold out but a few seated places are still available - it’s £50 for a four-course meal and special programme.
