Jack boxes clever to scoop top Rotary award

The Rotary Club of Chichester Priory presented their top award in front of 300 people at their annual boxing evening, held every year to raise money for local youth groups in Chichester.

Jack Hood, 82, has been coaching boxing in the city for 50 years and Rotary felt the legendary figure should be recognised. Not only has Jack coached but as a young man he was one of the best boxers produced by the city, starting his boxing at the Chichester Boys’ Club at the age of 14 .

The Paul Harris Fellowship, named after Rotary’s founder, is the top award worldwide in Rotary which is given for exceptional ‘service before self’ in the community and in Jack’s case thoroughly well deserved.

Although Jack hung up his gloves many years ago he was still responsible at the age of 81 of resurecting the boxing club last year at the Boys’ Club, which is now a thriving club again thanks to Jack. The man is a legend to hundreds of young people in Chichester.
