Chichester bowlers win county trophy for fourth time in five

CHICHESTER

Chichester 43 Norfolk 42

In a pulsating finish to a final worthy of any competition, Chichester were the winners by one shot overall on the very last end against Norfolk BC in the Sussex county Double Fours competition for the Abergavenny Cup.

Chichester have now won this prestigious trophy four times in the past five years, a feat not accomplished by any other club in Sussex since its inception more than 50 years ago – a quite remarkable achievement.

Scores: Malcolm Bowden, David Schofield, Simon Tooley, Mick Page (skip) won 25-15; Kevin Ball, Derek Leach, Clive Keedwell, Clive Benham (skip) lost 27-18.

A total of 28 teams from around the south converged on Chichester for their 23rd annual open tournament sponsored by Reynolds.

In group one after each team had played three games there were three on maximum points - Hedge End, Balls Out and Oddballs. Oddballs drew their last game to go into the play-off and Hedge end won their last game to progress to the final.

In group two The Roofers were on six points with the City Club on five.

In the play-off for third and fourth City Club won 13-9. In the final the Roofers (G Guy, M Leesen, M Wake, G Starks) won beat Hedge End (P Emery, M Nash, J Firth, C Higgins) 9-3.

Middleton 77 Chichester B 95

Chichester B produced a fine performance over the second half of their West Sussex League third-division match away to Middleton to secure eight points from an 18-shot victory.

Chichester A held off a late challenge from Southbourne to take the maximum ten points in their home game in the West Sussex League.

Chichester A dug deep over the last few ends to eke out a 21-shot win, picking up eight points, in their West Sussex League division-one match at home to the leaders and title holders.

In their West Sussex Bowls League first-division match away to Worthing, Chichester A produced a late fightback to win by just one shot, taking eight points.

Chichester entertained Fishbourne in a mixed friendly and had a comfortable victory.

Chichester took four points from their trip to Lancing in the C&M League after winning on one rink and losing on the other.

Scores: Chris Hobbs, Mary Potter, Wendy Adams & Betty Spicer won 31-9; Jean Hole, Bridget Collins, Denise Latter & April Janman lost 26-12.

Congratulations go to Debbie Hogg and Jean Hole on reaching the county final of the Unbadged Trixie Pairs. Debbie has also reached the final of the County Unbadged Singles despite losing both finals 18-14 and 21-15.

Both players enjoyed the experience of competing in their first county finals weekend.

FISHBOURNE

Fishbourne reached the semi-final of the Holbrook Cup with a hard-fought victory against Rogate with two of the three triples resulting in drawn games, but a good win for the Tony Bleach trio giving Fishbourne the win. They play Hotham for a spot in the final.

Scores: Wendy White, Audrey Saunders and Bernard Wallsgove drew 19-19, Chris Lankshear, Alan Banham and Tony Bleach won 28-11, Jim Lankshear, Brian Henham and Tony White drew 18-18.

Fishbourne played away to Storrington in a new fixture and lost 96-72, although each side shared the four triples.

Scores: Sue Lewis, Kirk Hardman and Bernard Wallsgrove won 24-20, Ken Ridley, Alan Marsh and Bill Cooper won 21-17, Wendy Cooper, Bernard Pack and Lionel Kneale lost 23-15, Janet Pack,Ted Badger and Gordon Summers lost 36-12.

Away to Portsmouth Gas Social, Fishbourne won 131-67.

Fishbourne enjoyed a 73-58 win over Witterings. Highlight of this game was a hotshot of all nine available by the trio of Chris Lankshear, Sue Lewis and Alan Marsh.

The club’s internal drawn mixed triples was played to final stage this weekend – the finalists are G and A Humphreys with B Berry to play C Smith, N. Reynolds and C Ruler.

Bognor played holders Chichester in the PC Cup – they won on one rink but lost 95-65.

In the semi final Chichester will be away to Norfolk BC.

They also played Petworth in a division-three game, winning on three rinks and losing on one for a 119-68 victory and eight points. Petworth were a player short on three rinks.

Aldingbourne Bowls Club celebrated 25 years of bowling at their Oliver’s Meadows ground combined with a tribute to the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The dress code of red, white and blue added to a relaxed atmosphere enjoyed by players and guests alike.

A fun competition of short jack, spot jack and full length bowls was won on shot difference by Derek Page, Maureen Grey, and Glyn Ball.

A warm welcome was given to the founder members John and Hilda Phillips, who made the long journey up from the west country.

A ladies’ two-rink league match away to Arundel resulted in a 16-16 draw on one rink and a 19-14 loss on the other.

A four-rink friendly against Arundel produced two wins, one draw and one loss. Aldingbourne won 63-59.

Away to Chichester in a four-rink men’s league match, Aldingbourne won on two rinks and lost on two, going down 84-59. Aldingbourne took four points out of ten against a strong Chi team.

The ladies’ teams in their two-rink league match with Chi lost on both rinks.

Capitulation by Pulborough BC at 11 ends saw Aldingbourne men’s team through to the semi-finals of the PC Cup, winning 85-17.

The four-ends final for the cup was won by Roger Brindel, Ann Chuter, Roy Ralph and Phil Kingswell (skip) beating June Barnard, Basil Osbourne, Corina Pearce, and Margaret Sole (skip) 5-2.

* This Saturday, Midhurst will host the Midhurst Cup final on their June Lane green (2.30pm). It is between Bognor and Midhurst and it is the first time Midhurst have reached their own final since 1994, when they won it.

PETWORTH

Petworth have had a busy week of bowling – they won a mixed triples against Fittleworth on their home carpet, but found it less straightforward away in the Men’s League on grass to East Preston and Bognor.
