Chichester’s super seven foil their rivals at fencing championships

CHICHESTER Fencing Club fielded a superb team of seven at the Sussex under-12 and under-14 foil fencing championships at St Aubyn’s School, Rottingdean.

In the boys’ under-12 competition, Isaac Jolley and Devlin Stigant fenced superbly in a hotly-contested competition finishing seventh and fifth respectively, highly creditable performances.

In the under-14 boys, Thomas Hosking, Oliver Hayward and Oscar O’Hara all fenced superbly, with Thomas narrowly missing out on the semi-finals after an excellent poule.

Oliver and Oscar battled through each round to meet in the final, where Oliver, in his first Sussex championships, narrowly lost to triple champion Oscar, who was on his usual unstoppable form. It was a brilliant effort from both.

In the under-14 girls’ competition, Claudia Kelley finished third position despite this being her very first competition, which was a wonderful result.

Then it was left to 11-year-old Charlotte Beadle to carry the flag for Chichester and see if she could add to the wonderful medal tally.

As a double Sussex champion already, she didn’t disappoint, with a flawless performance to carry off her third successive title and keep Oscar company in the championship hat-trick stakes.
