Common in the promotion picture

LITTLE Common thrust themselves very much into the promotion picture with a 2-1 win at Haywards Heath Town.

The Commoners' fourth last gasp goal since the turn of the year hoisted them up to fifth place in Sussex Division Three.

They are only five points behind Rottingdean Village, who hold the second promotion place, with four games in hand.

Joint manager Mark Linch said: "We've got to play all four of the teams above us so it depends on how the results go there. But if we pick up three points on Saturday it's looking a bit more rosy."

Common were a long way off the pace during the opening half-hour on Tuesday night and went behind to a 13th minute strike from McMenemy.

But they got their act together during the final quarter-of-an-hour of the first half and levelled a minute from the break courtesy of a fantastic finish from Lewis Hole.

The visitors began the second period as they ended the first and would have gone in front earlier had they managed to convert any of three one-on-one opportunities.

Both sides had shots cleared off the line and seventh-placed Heath struck the crossbar before Hole capped a superb performance on his return to the starting line-up by scoring an 89th minute winner.

"It was a massive win and it was typical of the never-say-die attitude and team spirit," added a delighted Linch.
