Commonwealth runners could head to Goodwood for cross-country races

SOME of the top cross-country runners from across the south will be in action at Goodwood on Saturday in the final autumn race of the season to be hosted by Chichester Runners.

Following the Sussex relays and Sussex League in October, this weekend sees the fiercely-competitive Hampshire League in action.

Including clubs from six counties, there will be the potential of seeing no fewer than five Commonwealth Games athletes in action, with all three of England’s men’s 10,000m runners – Chris Thompson and Andy Vernon from the Aldershot and Farnham club plus John Beattie from Southampton – eligible to compete.

In the senior women’s race, Stephanie Twell has already shown fine form by recording the fastest time at the national cross-country relays and may be joined by Charlotte Purdue, with both athletes representing the high-flying Aldershot club.

It will also be a chance for the local athletes to show their form. James Baker is eager to capitalise on his recent fine form over the longer distances and a number of Chichester’s juniors are keen to pit themselves against some of the top athletes in the country.

The venue is opposite the Goodwood racecourse with the first event starting at midday and the final event, the senior men’s race, off at 2.30pm. Entry to the course is free and spectators are welcome.
