Cricket: Chichester looking a little rough at Roffey

Chichester were second best by quite some margin in their Sussex Premier League visit to Roffey.

Captain Mark Bamford won the toss and elected to bat on a typically-good Roffey surface, but their batting ultimately lost them the game.

Things started well for the visitors. Bamford continued his fine form of the previous week with a brisk 46 and received good support from Simon Hasted (28).

But when the pair were lost the middle order could not capitalise on their fine start as wickets were lost at regular intervals.

That Chichester reached 190 all out was thanks mainly to the anchor role that Steve Sedgley performed.

Batting at No6, the 24-year-old model from Runcton played sensibly pushing the ball around, but also provided the big shots when required. But when he was lost for 44 the innings ran out of steam. Matt Davies and Abdul Khan were the pick of the Roffey bowlers with three wickets each.

In reply, Josh Fleming (31) played some big shots before he fell with the score at 40 to the bowling of Matt Geffen (1-39).

However, things did not get better for Chichester from that point as Theo Rivers (74) and George Fleming (76) batted for the rest of the innings to push the home side past their target.

The pair batted well, but the Chichester bowlers did not build any pressure with poor balls being bowled at frustratingly regular intervals.

Chichester must put this loss behind them as they travel to Eastbourne this week.
