Cricket legend Gatting boosts Emsworth celebrations

Former England skipper Mike Gatting was guest of honour as Emsworth Cricket Club marked its bicentenary with a presentation dinner attended by current and former players.

The club’s main sponsor – the Coal Exchange pub in Emsworth – plus families and friends were among 70 guests.

After the meal, Gatting made a speech and did a question-and-answer session – both of which were most interesting and entertaining.

Gatting handed over the season’s awards, which included a memento of their match against and MCC XI – a framed certificate showing both teams.

The evening finished with a raffle to raise funds for the club.

Clive Edwards, from the club’s centenary committee, said: “The presentation rounded off a very enjoyable evening and indeed bicentenary season.

“In the new year we will hand over a small donation to our two chosen charities – Help for Heroes and Emsworth Primary School.

“We also have a Kwik Cricket set donated by Mike Gatting on behalf of the ECB which will be given to the school for use next season and beyond.”
