CRICKET: Littlehampton continue perfect start

LITTLEHAMPTON Cricket Club continued their perfect start to life in Sussex League Division 3 West on Saturday with a comfortable eight-wicket win over local rivals Arundel.

Littlehampton have now taken maximum points from both their opening two games but captain Gareth Challen still believes there is room for improvement.

He said: "We could have played better on Saturday. Our fielding wasn't brilliant, we dropped a catch and probably should have stopped about 10 of their singles but we still did the job.

"We probably could have restricted them to less than 100 but I wouldn't have been unhappy chasing 200 on the wicket as we had a small boundary and the outfield was quite quick.

"The bowlers bowled well, though, and then we finished it off with the bat quite easily."

Arundel won the toss and elected to bat – after their victory over Bognor Regis the previous week batting first – but their Australian overseas player, Edward Lewis, was their only player to put up any real resistance as he top-scored with 66 in their total of 127.

Lewis struck 12 fours and one six from 82 deliveries, although was dropped early in his innings when Andy Greig failed to hold on to a chance at point.

Sean Twine, with 11, was their only other batsmen to reach double figures as Littlehampton's Luke Vinter continued his excellent start to the year with four more wickets to follow on from his seven last week.

He took 4-34 from 11.3 overs, while Chris Heberlein, Thomas Lee and Benn Challen all chipped in with two wickets each.

Littlehampton then comfortably reached their target in 23 overs for the loss of just two wickets.

Graham Blann went for a 32-ball 36, which included eight fours, and Benn Challen fell for 18 after Ryan Chitty juggled a catch off Ollie Morris' bowling.

James Askew finished unbeaten on 32 and Heberlein smashed 39 from only 21 deliveries, with six fours and two sixes.

Littlehampton travel to Goring on Saturday, while Arundel host Slinfold.

Littlehampton hope their overseas player, Sri Lankan Shoham Bowala, will arrive in time for their game with Middleton on May 27.
