West Wittering were short of a number of players and called on a couple of younger players who performed superbly in the field.

Captain Joe Sissons won the toss and elected to bowl, but Ed Crabb and John Mathews put on a good opening stand before Mathews was bowled by Alex Smith.

Crabb retired on 27 and the Wittering bowlers were finding it hard to get wickets, despite keeping the run-rate down.

Sam Tongue had Mustow caught by Garnham and then bowled Fisher, while Sissons trapped Keating lbw. This left the visitors with a modest 92 after their 25 overs.

West Wittering got off to the worst poissible start when opener Lewis Rhoder was bowled by Musto without toubling the scorers, but Luke Garnham carried on his fine form with the bat in a decent partnership with Charlie Caddy before retiring on 25.

Caddy scored a steady 17 before being caught by Cruicks off Fisher. Sissons set about getting the game over quickly with a series of boundaries before he retired on 25.

Arron Newman kept the scoreboard ticking and he and Harry Standing saw West Wittering home, Standing hitting the winning runs with six overs to spare.

Middleton

The Middleton under-ten softball team won the toss at home to Arundel (155), chose to field and went on to score 197, winning by 42 runs. There were double-figure scores for Charlie Broggi and Monty Hawkins and wickets for Charlie Maginnis, Dill Howell and Connor Smith.

The under-11s bowl team played at East Preston with a nine-man team. In an exciting and close game, Middleton scored a creditable 117 for five, but the inevitable gaps in the field took their toll and East Preston (140 for eight) won by three runs with only five balls remaining.

Middleton’s under-11 shield team hosted Littlehampton and were put in. A score of 145 proved too much for a talented Littlehampton team (138) who lost by seven runs.

It was an excellent performance in the field from Middleton which included three run-outs and a stumping. Owen Spicer scored 12 not out, while the pick of the bowlers were Rhys Nicholas and Jurgens Oosthuizen, who each took two wickets for low scores.
