Having won the toss and elected to field, Bognor held Chichester to 128 for six with lively all-rounder Tom Woolnough the pick of the attack with two for 17. For Priory Park, skipper Jonny Heaven was the mainstay with 61 not out.

In reply, Bognor began steadily but lost opener Max Ashmore for 24. However, the stage was set for burly all-rounder Andy Quincey and the man known as the ‘Ginger Bradman’, Ryan Maskell, to put the game to bed.

With Maskell finishing on 51 not out and Quincey on 49 not out, Bognor reached the 129-run target and won by nine wickets.

Stirlands v Bognor

New captain George Coles invited Bognor to bat and Stirlands started strongly, with young seamer Finn Carter and the wily left-arm spinner Struan Cameron offering few loose deliveries.

Max Ashmore feathered an out-swinging delivery into the grateful hands of the Stirlands keeper. This brought the dangerous Ryan Maskell to the crease but Maskell wasn’t aware of the bullet arm belonging to Leo Beal – unsuccessfully taking on the throw to be run out for only nine.

Stirlands continued to bowl tightly and field with great enthusiasm and assisted by the retirement of top scorer Andrew Grieg managed to restrict Bognor to 86 for six, Quincey top-scoring.

Bognor removed both openers very cheaply to leave Stirlands reeling on four for two before the experienced Will Gubbins was joined by captain Coles.

They rotated the strike and capitalised on any loose bowling from a well-drilled Bognor attack. With the score on 34 Gubbins was caught in the deep.

Wickets continued to fall but vital cameos edged Stirlands closer to the Bognor total.

There were two wickets apiece for pacemen Josh Broad and Tom Woolnough.

As the match entered the final over, just five runs were needed for victory, but the home side could manage only four, leaving Bognor jubilant and in the third round.

Stirlands will look to build on the positives of this game on Saturday when the first XI travel to Glynde whilst the 2nd XI host Billingshurst.

Bognor’s victory earned then this second match of the day, against hosts Stirlands.

The audience got their money’s worth as a tight finish worthy of the IPL occurred as Bognor sneaked home by one run.
