Club-mates delighted as Smith gets Sussex CCC chance
Eastergate cricketers are among those congratulating teenager Nick Smith after he was named among the new intake of youngsters that Sussex CCC are putting their faith in.
He is one of seven players who have retained their places from last year’s Sussex academy intake. Joe Billings, Tom Gordon, Tom Haines, Nick Oxley, Ben Twine and Harrison Ward are the others, and all are under the tutelage of new academy director Carl Hopkinson.
All have shown in the past year they can put in high-level performances as well as absorb new information and alter their techniques.
Smith is primarily a right-arm seam bowlers. He hails from Chichester and made his debut in the second XI in September.
Sussex’s academy director Hopkinson said: “We have seen many young players progressing from the Academy in recent seasons to the first team and our aim is for that to continue.
“We’re excited by the group we have together.”
Smith has played for Eastergate for several years and chairman Steve Grant said: “Nick had a fabulous 2016 season for Eastergate first XI with 27 wickets and more than 500 runs in division one of West Sussex Invitation League.
“This capped a very successful association with the club – he is moving on to the County League for 2017 – where he represented every age group and scored hundreds in every age group from 11 through to this year.
“He is a remarkable talent bearing in mind he is 16 and a genuine all-rounder and Eastergate Cricket Club wish him every success with his county career and thank him for his huge contribution on the field through all age groups, and also for the many times he assisted in the nets with juniors and seniors alike.”
