Cricket: Slick Selsey finish the job

They knew a win would secure the title and what followed a day full of tension.

Himani won the toss and elected to bat and were dismissed for 135 with Mitesh Patel (22), Sandeep Patel (29) and Nutakki (31) the main run scorers.

Tom Cripps bowled superbly to record six for 31, assisted by Pete Horner (2/37) and Josh Stocks (1/25).

This was a decent score on a wet track and slow long outfield.

Selseys reply got off to the worst possible start as they collapsed to two for three.

This brought Nic Nolan and Nick Horner to the crease and they began rebuilding the innings and a partnership of 90.

They looked to have made the game safe before Nolan fell for a gritty 40 and when Nick Horner went for a good 42, the nerves started to jangle.

But Ash Humphries took control of the game with 14 not out and, with Tom Amis six not out, saw Selsey over the line to record a two-wicket win to cap a great season.

West Wittering Academy have had an unbelievable first year where they have fielded a team with an average age of 15, seen former colts score 50s, five-wicket hauls have been taken and some great examples of fielding seen.

But nothing could compare to their last game of the season against Singleton CC.

The 51st annual game between the two clubs was incredible for all involved and all who watched.

West Wittering lost the toss on a pitch that looked like a bowling paradise but Andy Priest continued his unbelievable form accompanied by his regular opening partner, captain Marc Slowey.

Both were scoring runs well off the front foot. Slowey (53) was eventually bowled after hitting a six straight down the ground to bring up his half-century and a 122 partnership.

Up stepped 15-year-old Charlie Caddy to hit a rapid 73. Priest hit the ball to all areas of the ground, bringing up his second century of the season, but he was eventually was caught on the boundary for 116.

With only three overs left Tim Osborne, the usual No 11, was firing on all cylinders and hit 26 not out and possibly the biggest six the club has ever seen. He saw the team to a massive total of 300 off 40 overs.

West Wittering’s opening bowlers were bowling tight lines to restrict the scoring and both Jack Lyons and Carl Tupper (1-35) got the only maidens of the game; however there was no breakthrough until Tupper’s last over, when Slowey took a low catch.

Singleton No3 Simon Morgan came in and played some great shots with unbelievable power and brought Singleton back into it.

Slowey was in the right place again to break the partnership as a drive went flew straight to him to get George Stephens out for 64.

Morgan’s 124 took the game to the last ball where Singleton needed two to tie and after a dream over from Mark Brien he saw red and an overthrow tied the game, with both teams scoring 300.

The Millennium Meadow had seen 600 runs in one game for the first time in its history.

After handshakes all round it was clear to see cricket was a winner on this unbelievable day.

Another season complete for West Wittering – roll on 2016.
