Selsey shine but Wittering wobble

Here are the latest reports from West Wittering, Selsey and Aldwick.

West Wittering v Selsey

Invitation League division three

West Wittering welcomed local rivals Selsey to the meadow hoping to reverse the result of the previous encounter – but were unable to gain revenge for their loss at Selsey as the visitors went home with the spoils.

WW skipper Carl Tupper chose to bowl first and Lyons struck with the fifth ball, having Fewster caught behind by Short. Lyons and Osborne bowled tightly until Osborne had to be removed from the attack because of a persistent injury.

Harry Staight entered the attack and he and Lyons picked up the wickets of Karl Walton (32) and A Horner (7). Salmon, Hammond and James Staight continued the good work from opening bowlers, not allowing Selsey to score much more than three an over.

Staight bowled a fantastic spell of leg-spin bowling and picked up the wickets of T Benham, Dave Benham and Nick Horner.

But while wickets fell at one end, Selsey captain Nolan took control of the innings with gritty 60 after some early luck, before Jewiss bowled him.

A late burst from Jewiss and Harry Staight saw them pick up the final three wickets, ending the Selsey innings at 147 off 44.3 overs.

Keeper Short took four dismissals behind the stumps.

With West Wittering needing to chase 148 to win, Tupper (11) and James Staight (35) started positively with early boundaries. However some tight bowling from Tom Amis and Tom Cripps restricted the pair before Tupper fell with the score on 47 for one.

This ordinarily would be a good start; however Cripps and Pete Horner set about dismissing J Staight, Trimmer (2), H Staight (0) and Short (0) to reduce Wittering to 58 for five.

Jewiss and White began trebuild the innings, taking the score into the 80s before White (28) became Cripps’ fourth victim to end a good spell of four for 29 off 15 overs.

P Horner ended his 11 overs with five for 52 and D Benham took one for one off two overs. Hammond (0) fell to a blinding bit of fielding and a one-handed catch, Lyons and Salmon went for ducks and Jewiss was out for 17.

It was a disappointing day at the office for West Wittering, who could not match a faultless display with the ball when batting, but an excellent one for Selsey.

Aldwick v Scaynes Hill

Division two

Aldwick seem to have stemmed their mid-season wobble and have bounced back to third spot with two important victories on the trot. The latest victims were Scaynes Hill, who were defeated by 85 runs.

Aldwick managed only 18 runs in the first 16 overs but blasted 102 runs in the final 16. Opener Louis Paul uncharacteristically fell for a duck but his opening partner Alex Cooper did a sterling job holding the innings together with an important top score of 61.

Paul was dismissed by Aidan Hother (4-40) and first change Robert Deane (2-41) was also among the wickets but wicketless Jonathan Hall was equally important conceding just nine runs in 12 overs.

Ryan Purvis (22) and Josh Sargeant (27*) were the bit-hitters in the latter stages to take their side to 181 for nine.

In reply, Scaynes Hill opener George Parker (34) put up the most resistance and later on William Ash (26) made a notable contribution but the visitors were rolled out for 96 as Aldwick’s return to form continued.

Adam Robinson (1-36) and Louis Paul (1-9) did the early damage but it was first-change pair Keelan Belcher (3-42) and Ollie Smith (4-9), who decimated the visitors’ line-up.

With four games to go – three of those against promotion contenders – Aldwick’s fate is clearly in their own hands and they must continue their winning ways this week away to Crawley Eagles thirds.

Scaynes Hill 2nd v Aldwick 2nd

Division seven

Aldwick II’s recent poor form continued with another defeat, this time by 119 runs away to Scaynes Hill seconds.

No Scaynes Hill batsman made 50 but the Aldwick bowlers allowed all the batsmen to make runs – Matt Ellis (37), Charles Copsey (41), Rob Green (25), Jamie Frankham (47), and Alex MacKay (29) all contributed to a big total of 242 for six.

Ben Bainbridge (2-43) and Liam Hick s (2-40) were the top wicket takers but 25 extras were sloppy.

Aldwick’s fragile batting line-up was exposed by opener Andy Jones (3-34) and Rob Green (6-16).

Matt Spindler (27) top scored closely followed by Will Lewry (23) as the visitors were rolled over for 123.

Middleton Academy v West Wittering 2nd

Division eight

West Wittering seconds got their promotion push back on track.

Middleton won the toss and got off to a solid start and reached drinks with the score at 95 for one.

Andy Priest had Middleton’s main man Harry Pacey caught behind for 54 and Middleton’s batting order began to crumble with some hostile bowling from Priest and well executed yorkers from Joe Pink which nearly brought him a hat-trick.

Middleton finished on 147 all out, the pick of the bowlers Priest picking up five for 36.

West Wittering’s run chase did not get off the best start when Mark Taylor got bowled for a duck in the first over but Priest and Marc Slowey put on 119 before Slowey was out lbw for 34.

Priest brought up his maiden 100 with the last shot of the game, a thick edge through gully, giving Wittering the victory by eight wickets on a fantastic day for Priest.

West Wittering are only a couple of wins from the title while Middleton are consigned to relegation.

Selsey 2nd v Brighton & Hove 5th

Division nine

Selsey crushed Brighton by 195 runs. Selsey batted first and amassed 254 for eight off 40 overs.

Tig Hoare and James Chaloner continued their good form with Hoare scoring 80 and Chaloner 71. Pete Amis kept the scoreboard ticking along with 31.

In reply Brighton collapsed to 59 all out with Luke Cawte (4/21), Ash Humphries (2/10), Will Smith (2/11) and Matt Weller (2/13) the wicket-takers.
