Chichester under-ten Spitfires travelled to Arundel CC to resume their league campaign.

The hosts won the toss and decided to field first. Both sides started cautiously but batters Tom Baily and Rohan Chapple impressed in their four overs.

Calum Baily made his Colts debut at the age of six. He batted really well with great encouragement from his team-mates, including his older brother.

Arundel struggled to take wickets but good bowling and excellent fielding kept things tight. An exceptional catch from James Connoly at fine leg was a highlight.

The innings finished on 169 from 16 overs.

At the turnaround, steady opening bowling from Jerome Brackley and Charlie Bennetts provided a good start for the Spitfires.

Alan Biju and Freddie Rustell took one for seven and one for one respectively, exemplifying the economical bowling of the visitors.

The home team found it hard to make inroads, facing tight bowling and excellent fielding. Arundel finished with 132.

Findon CC v Chichester Priory Park Under-10 Hurricanes

Chichester Hurricanes travelled to Findon. They won the toss and asked Findon to bat first.

Chichester bowled with good discipline and Findon found runs hard to come by, but they battled hard and finished their 16 overs with a total of 158 for seven.

For Chichester, captain Rory Minton lead the way with the ball, taking 3 -11 with his away swing bowling. He was well supported by Finn Weller, who finished with 2-9 and Lucas Toft, who also showed good control with the ball.

The fielders stuck to their task well, with Josh Karr and Ollie Lancaster catching well.

The Hurricanes made steady progress with good contributions throughout the innings.

An overcast afternoon in Wickham brought Salthill’s sixth win of the season.

Salthill were asked to field and the formidable partnership of Ashley Court and James Cox opened the bowling.

They were unable to make the breakthrough until the 28th over, Steve King providing the first wicket with Wickham on 109.

Salthill proceeded to take wickets at regular intervals to leave Wickham on 161 for nine at the end of the innings.

Wicket-takers were Steve King (6-0-26-2), James Cox (10-1-47-3), Rupert Fisk (5-0-13-1) and Ashley Court (10-2-24-1).

Salthill felt a target of 162 was comfortably reachable.

Court started the runs flowing freely with Alec Wallsgrove anchoring the other end. Court was caught in the deep on 35 with Salthill on 53 for one, bringing in Jamie Gray.

Gray and Wallsgrove guided Salthill to drinks on a score of 70-1. Gray was bowled by D Chetri for 14 and in stepped R Fisk, coming off the back of a fantastic bowling and fielding performance, full of confidence and looking to step up the run rate.

Fisk spent no time getting his eye in and when his wicket fell 25 minutes later Salthill had moved from to 150 leaving only 12 runs needed in 10 overs.

Wallsgrove reached his 50 in 80 balls, ending on 53*, taking Salthill to their sixth win of the seasonin eight games.

* Salthill host their annual open day with St Wilfrid’s Hospice on Sunday, August 14 at the Fishbourne Centre in Blackboy Lane.

They are hoping for a big turnout. The day includes a raffle and all proceeds are shared between St Wilfrid’s and Salthill Cricket Club.

Lavant v Ebernoe

Lavant asked Ebernoe to bat on the usual good Lavant strip. Ebernoe provided strong opposition with West and Stemp hitting the ball to all parts of the ground and adding 140-plus for the second wicket before Stemp retired hurt and West was trapped in front by Brooker.

There was a flurry of Ebernoe wickets as they pushed for the declaration at tea ending on 208 for seven.

Lavant’s reply started slowly with two wickets falling before the score had reached 40. This brought Carroll to the crease who accelerated the rate, ably supported by Brooker and then Banks.

The run rate crept to more than ten an over which was too much for the Lavant batsmen and the game ended in a draw with Lavant on 142 for five.

Goodwood v Arundel

Goodwood elected to bat first and after a confident start by Matt Geffen and Ezaz, a big score looked likely.

Ezaz was first to his hundred – his first ton for either Goodwood or Chichester and most think there are many more to come.

The partnership went past 200 and Geffen also reached his century, a chanceless innings of fine strokeplay.

The partnership was broken with the score on 252. It was a record partnership for any wicket by a Goodwood pair.

Ezaz made 135, Geffen 102. Johnny Heyworth and Steve Dudman both made 11 not out and Goodwood finished on 285 for two off 40 overs, the highest score by a Goodwood side for at least ten years.

Johnny Heaven and James Mayne opened the bowling and Mayne made the breakthrough with the score on seven.

Heaven made it two down in the next over.

Tom Gaskin took 12 off Mayne’s next over, and then Mayne went for 30 in an over. Gaskin was caught on the boundary off Heaven by Heyworth. Heaven finished with three for 21.

Kirdford v Kirdford President’s XI

It had been eight years since Kirdford won the annual President’s Day fixture, but they took the field in good hear.

Batting first for the first of two innings, the President’s XI got off to a flyer with Robinson scoring 44 in 30 balls. Jamie Rountree took two wickets in an over, but Freddie Thomas (son of the president) whacked the ball to all corners.

Good bowling at the end of the innings by James Gillett and Simon Johnston meant 138 was the final score.

Kirdford’s reply started very slowly, with 23 on the board after ten overs and youngster Evans bowling exceptionally well.

Big late hitting by Simon Johnston and Ben Simpson got them to a respectable total of 99, 39 behind after the first innings.

Kirdford needed to bowl and field well from the start of the second innings, but they got off to a woeful start. The President’s batsmen reached 89 off the first ten overs.

Excellent bowling though by Alex Keville stemmed the flow and the innings finished on 141, so Kirdford needed 181 off 20 overs.

Patrick Haywood and Ben Jeffery started brilliantly, but bad luck put paid to Jeffery. Kirdford continued to attack through Mal Eustice, Rountree and Simpson, but the total was too much.

The president finished the match with a wicket on the final ball, bowling Chip Charman, and the spoils once again went to the his band of cricketers.

Ashling v Emsworth

Ashling were put into bat on a damp but drying wicket. Simon Hutchin (35) and Chris Cranna (19) made steady progress, helped by Dan Cooke’s lively 19.

The lower order really provided the fireworks with Charlie Colley (25), Adam Shaul (45*) and Henry Slatter (58*) enabling the home team to post a formidable 232 for 7 from 40 overs. Amir’s 2-34 was Emsworth’s best bowling effort.

In reply, only Paul Walmsley (29) looked comfortable for the visitors as wickets fell steadily. Charlie Colley’s 3-21 included a miraculous caught and bowled, and occasional bowler Carl Batty chipped in with 2-17.

Emsworth were eventually all out for 105.
