Sussex Cricket Foundation launches Wheelchair Cricket Programme
The Sussex Cricket Foundation are delighted to announce the launch of a Wheelchair Cricket Programme in Sussex, as part of its continuing commitment to make cricket accessible to all.
Working in partnership with Wheelpower UK, the ECB, the British Association for Cricketers with Disabilities and Ortus Business Finance, this exciting new programme will look to offer an exciting, adapted game of Wheelchair Cricket suitable for people both young and old alike.
Focusing on ability, not disability, is fundamental to all of the Foundation’s disability programmes, Wheelchair Cricket will now take its place alongside the Schools Coaching programme in SEN schools, supported by Chance to Shine, the Multi Skills Sessions for Learning Disability/Physical Disability (LD/PD) participants delivered in partnership with Active Sussex, and also Table Cricket Sessions delivered in partnership with The Lord Taverners.
Roger Newman, Sussex Cricket Foundation Development Manager said, “Regular wheelchair cricket sessions across the county will add to the range of weekly activity that we offer, illustrating further progress in our mission to ensure opportunities for everyone.
“It will also enable us to establish a development pathway, for those who want it, to strive to play for Sussex, which will run alongside our County LD/PD Squads, our Sharks Visually Impaired Squad and the newly formed Deaf Squads.”
The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham will be hosting the first open session on Thursday June 23rd from 4.30pm to 6.00pm, and anyone wishing to take part in the session should contact Roger on 01273 827104 or [email protected] to book a place.
The Sussex Cricket Foundation are also keen to hear from existing wheelchair groups who would like to give wheelchair cricket a go. Any group who would like to arrange for a session need to contact Roger in the first instance.
