Sussex cricketers attempt '˜the longest marathon playing indoor cricket' Guinness World Record

Matt Blandford (Crawley), Marcus Campopiano (Cuckfield), Adam Neill (Robertsbridge) and Regan Derham (who plays for East Grinstead) will be part of a University of Portsmouth Student Union 16 man squad hoping to break the record.

Blandford, who plays for Three Bridges in the Sussex Cricket League, said: “The record currently stands at 25 hours and 59 minutes. Now we aim to not only beat this record but smash it and set a record around 36 hours, which will mean us finishing around 8:30-9pm on Saturday February 20.

“The record basically says that we have to play back to back, continuous indoor cricket games for as long as possible, by the same squad of players. In total 36 games will be played with players not allowed to leave the hall. So as you can see, it will be a monumental effort!”

Alongside breaking the record, the team are also raising money for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, a cause that is close to some of UPSU members’ hearts.

Blandford said: “We have set out sights on raising £1,000 but we want to raise as much as possible. Fundraising for great causes like this is a big part of the club and something we really care about.”

Other team members include Luke Bellars, from Redhill, and Max Heise, from Horley.
