Darts ace Annals so close to Lakeside honours

TEENAGE darts ace Harry Annals from Bognor competed in the regional play-offs at Lakeside in the hope of reaching the nationals.

From a strong entry of 300 qualifiers, Annals threw some good darts during the day to reach the last 32.

He opened up his final game with a 180 and won in 13 darts, but despite back-to-back 140s his opponent won the next two legs in 16 and 13 darts.

In the Bognor Friday Night League, the first competition of the season got under way with the mixed pairs knockout.

Sixty men and women – the biggest turnout for a mixed pairs knockout in at least six years – were all fighting for the title.

After a slow start, the big players made their way into the later rounds. In the semi-finals, Chichester’s Hayley and Chris Gatford had chances to beat the mother-and-son pair of Carol and Sam Abrehart, but failed on the doubles.

Partners Kayleigh Greene and Cliff Prior had a more successful semi against Kelly Hopkins and Matt Shoebridge.

After taking the first leg of the final, Greene and Prior looked set to take the title, but some missed doubles let in the Arbeharts, making it one leg all. Again looking good in the last leg to take the title, multiple darts at their doubles let down Greene and Prior, and although there were missed doubles from the Arbeharts, they hit the one needed to win the match. This adds to the same title they won in February for the Winter Benevolent League and regains the title they won in 2009.
