Derby honours to Plums

Plumpton were the in-form side but Newick brought a strong squad.

Playing with the wind in the first half, Plums effectively sealed the game within the first 35 minutes.

Their high tempo posed Newick significant problems defensively in the middle of the park, where Craig “Bull” Wells continued his fine form to bully a strong pack.

Tries came at regular intervals in the first half.

Oliver Shaw scored the first as Rhys Beale exposed his opposite number and Lewis Beale coverted from out wide.

Within two minutes Plums had scored in a similar position as again Beale was the creator, this time putting Gareth Laurens into the opposite corner.

The game was effectively sealed five minutes from half time when a strong forward drive allowed Steve Blake, named MoM for the second week running, to crash over in the corner and Lewis Beale again converted.

It was a different story in the second half as Newick came out firing and put in a strong effort in the scrum and line out. But Plums showed some great defence and held off Newick for long periods, despite the number of injuries mounting.

Newick did score two short range tries from their effective line out but failed to add the extras and time finally ran out for them.

The 19-10 win completed a derby double for Plumpton after a big win earlier.

Plumpton now take a week off before hosting Worthing February 15 (2.30).
