Dragons in fiery form in schools championship

A small team from the Bognor-based Dragonflyers Trampoline Club participated in the south-east schools championships in Uckfield.

More than 400 children from clubs and schools in the region took part, ranging from novice to elite – including international level.

The top three individuals in each category qualify to zonal finals where the south-east, south-west, southern and London winners jump for a place at GB national finals.

Competition was tough with up to 80 competitors in an age group.

Rebecca Phelps (Funtington Primary) and Daniel Southgate (Felpham Community College) participated in their first competitions at under-11 girls’ novice and under-13 boys’ novice. Both finished an amazing fourth place making them primary reserve for the regional team.

James Smith (The Regis School) and Philipee Newton Young (St Marys) put in stunning performances to take silver in the under-15 boys’ elite and under-11 boys’ elite, earning them a well-deserved zonal place.

Both are at the younger end of their groups, Philipee only eight, and Flyers coaches see two future national finalists.

Karis Pullen (The Regis School), coming back from injury and with another year left in the under-13 girls’ elite, finished tenth, with Charlotte Taylor (Chi High for Girls) 12th.

The highlight of the day was the under-19 girls’ elite, in which Flor Dempster (Bishop Luffa) proved a force to contend with finishing seventh.
