Feb fencer Kasjan strikes gold - and silver

CHICHESTER fencer Kasjan Paszkowski believes his gold and double silver at the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games proves how much he has improved over the past 12 months.

Paszkowski joined 1,600 other competitors in Manchester for the UK’s largest multi-sport event for elite-level school-age athletes.

The Chichester Fencing Club member was in action in the mixed wheelchair competition at the Bolton Arena over the course of the four days.

It proved to be a successful outing as he took epee gold and foil and sabre silver to make it three trips to the podium in total.

Twelve months ago the Regis School pupil failed to claim a title but after changing all that this time around, he admitted he couldn’t be happier.

“I was here last year and I got three bronzes from each so it’s a big improvement for me as a fencer,” he said.

“I’ve won the silver medal in foil after losing by just one point which was a disaster and then I won the epee competition by one point as well, and a silver up last in the sabre.

“When you get into the fight, I do it with my instinct. I don’t really think about what I’m doing.”

“For me the Sainsbury’s 2015 School Games was amazing because of all the people and the help you receive from the coaches and the people around you.”

The Games, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, featured 12 different sports across four days.

And with Paszkowski fast making a name for himself, the teenager believes that fencing is firmly the sport for him.

“Right now I’m thinking about whether I want to go down the fencing path or whether I want to continue with my education more,” he added.

“I’m not sure but fencing will definitely be a part of my life. None of my friends really know about it as I don’t tell them.

“Friends from my fencing club know but I don’t really tell anyone about it, so I hope they’re going to be happy when I tell them.”
