Fencers keep it in family to bring title home to Chichester

Chichester Fencing Club fielded a very special team at the Sussex men's team foil championships.

For the first time, regular team members George Hendrie and Toby Lee, both still only 17, were joined in the team by Toby’s father Paul Lee, in his very first competition. And what a team they proved to be.

Lee junior and Hendrie fenced with their usual beautiful, flowing styles, but Lee senior wasn’t to be outdone by the youngsters, getting some great hits even on the highest-level competitors, showing true grit and determination and proving a very valuable team member.

The team proved unbeatable on the day and went on to win their third consecutive team foil championship title. The boys have been winning the adult title since they were only 15.

Before the event, Chichester’s head coach Sharon Blackman was elected the first chairwoman of Sussex County Fencing Union, so it was another very good day for the club.
