Fine and friendly end to West Sussex bowlers’ season

West Sussex B played their final friendly of the season when they visited Surrey.

They started steadily, sharing the points in the first session, but improved in the second session, winning three and drawing one for an 11-5 lead.

They maintained their standards in the afternoon, winning three games in the third session and winning two and drawing one in the final session.

With bonus points in singles, triples and fours, this gave them a very satisfying win by 28-12 and 183-153 in shots to finish their season on a high note.

In the singles, Crablands’ Mollie Back won 16-13 and 15-10. In the pairs, the Bognor duo of Betty Williams and Marlene Steel won 18-10 and lost 14-8.

In the triples, Lavant’s Jackie Lee won 12-10 and 11-9 and in the fours, Crablands’ Elaine Sadler won 13-2 and 12-9 while club-mate Rod Shambrook drew 8-8 and lost 10-6.

ARUN

Whiteknights 93 Arun 148

Arun captain Barry Sanford was in optimistic mood for this trip to White Knights in Reading. His optimism was well-founded.

He said: “All rinks did extremely well for Arun and we all had a good day out.”

Arun 128 Worthing Pavilion 122

Worthing Pavilion knew they had to win to improve their chances of staying up – while Arun didn’t want to find themselves having to get maximum points from the last game.

Arun were 12-0 down after the first end and by the tenth end, Arun were 20 shots down. It looked a mammoth task to pull back with Arun winning on only two rinks.

Matt Bonnar rallied his team to do better and by the 14th end, all the Arun teams knew they had to improve or lose this game. On the 18th end there were just two shots in it and by the time the first teams finished the scoreboard read 120-120. On the remaining rinks, Arun pulled six shots ahead.

Arun took 7.5 points to 3.5 for Worthing. That left Arun second in the league but Egerton Park, on top, have played one game less.

Arun host Adur this Saturday in their final game.

LAVANT

Lavant Green visited Nyetimber Gold. On mat one, Green were 11-7 up on end 12 but a six from Gold and then wins in six of the last seven ends gave them a win by ten shots.

Mat two saw Green, from being eight shots adrift by end four, forging ahead to win by four shots. The friendly was well won by Nyetimber. Scores: S Meyer (skip), K Fancy, W Cooper, P Lee lost 23-13; M Keane (skip), B Cooper, E Keane, C Beardmore won 20-16; (friendly): P Beardmore (skip), J Lee, Y Squires, C Martin lost 29-15.

Lavant Green gave Walberton Blues the blues. Mat one took 16 ends to romp home by 27 shots. Mat two kept their noses in front to win by ten shots. The friendly mat was won by Lavant.

Lavant played West Dean in the first of two legs of their annual Two Villages Cup tussle, a three-mat triples match.

On mat one Lavant were hammered by West Dean by 26 shots but mat two was more even, Lavant winning by six shots. On mat three, Lavant thrashed West Dean by 25 shots. Lavant hold a vital five shot lead which they will need when facing West Dean outdoors for the second leg on June 28.

Lavant Green 38 Southbourne Rovers 42

Lavant Green hosted Southbourne Rovers in south-west zone division two of the West Sussex Winter League and high-scoring ends on mat one soon gave Green a lead which they took to the finish to win by seven shots.

The reverse was true on mat two, leading to a win by Rovers by 11 shots.

MIDHURST

Midhurst had two very hard matches at home versus Arundel and Bognor Goodwoods.

Against Arundel, the Eagles won narrowly on two mats and had a good win on the third mat, taking the overall score to 70-48.

Bognor Goodwoods, who were a very strong team, beat Midhurst 57-33.

The first part of the club’s singles championship was won by Susan Judd, who goes through to the final in April.

Southbourne lost at Arundel in the quarter-finals of the West Sussex plate. Southbourne lost on both mats and by 20 shots overall.

HUNSTON

The club’s final away game of the season was enjoyable but ended in a 70-55 defeat.
