Fine win for Horsham trainer Gary Moore at Goodwood

QUALITY racing at Goodwood on Saturday included an excellent win for Horsham-based trainer Gary Moore, when he took the Listed Windflower March Stakes with Mourilyan, ridden by his son Ryan.

Moore, who moved his operation from Brighton when buying Charles Cyzer's former premises at Cisswood House Stables, just outside Horsham at Lower Beeding, was delighted with the result.

It followed on from a double the previous day and Moore said: " I've now proved you can train winners from my new stables.

"Everyone keeps saying this horse is ungenuine, but he is not. He is a bridle horse and needs to be held up. In his previous race he saw too much daylight and didn't finish his race.

"This time he was held up from the start and had some excellent finishing speed."

Moore has sent out 35 winners on turf and all-weather in the current Flat season.

Mourilyan is trained in Dubai by Herman Brown for owner Ramzan Kadyrov and Moore trains him in England.

" I don't know whether he will run again this season in England or whether he will return to Dubai. But he is a very good horse."

For Ryan Moore, it was a quickfire 24-1 double at Goodwood, for he took the opening race on Golden Desert, which provided trainer Terry Mills with his first winner for two months when winning the totescoop6 Stakes.

It has been a difficult year for Terry Mills due to ill health, and this was the first of his five wins he had been able to be on course for this season.

Mills said: "It is lovely to be here and the team have done a fantastic job over the last few months.

"This horse has been knocking on the door. He has been showing plenty of speed and not quite getting home, so we thought dropping back in trip would help."

John Dunlop sent out Mudaaraah in the Berry Brothers and Rudd Prestige Stakes over seven furlongs, when the filly put in an impressive performance ridden by Tadhg O'Shea, absolutely flying at the end to beaten only by a nose in a blanket photo finish.

The two-year-old filly had won two races already this season, including a Sandown Listed race, and, running on well, was extremely unlucky not to win.

The race went by the narrowest of margins to the Barry Hills trained Sent From Heaven.

John Dunlop said: "Mudaaraah acquitted herself extremely well today, and on that performance she is likely to race again before the end of the season."

There was disappointment for Pulborough trainer Amanda Perrett when Classic Vintage, a previous course winner, failed to stay the extra distance in the Windflower March Stakes, ridden by her bother-in-law Jim Crowley.

But there was recompense on Sunday when Jim Crowley booted home two of the trainer's other horses at Ripon, when Sierra Alpha won at 28-1 and Saborido at 7-2 for a fine double.
