But the attacking talent has admitted he still doesn’t know what his best position is.

McGurk believes he can be the man to produce a steady flow of goals to fire the Blues into League One.

The 26-year-old made an impressive return to the starting XI in the 3-1 win against Barnet on Saturday.

McGurk was preferred up front to Matt Tubbs, with Jayden Stockley out of contention after his partner gave birth.

The former Burton Albion and Tranmere man caught the eye on his first league start for Paul Cook’s side.

He capped his performance with the crucial second goal as Pompey moved into the automatic promotion positions.

Now McGurk is aiming to nail down the position in Cook’s side – and believes he can bring the goal threat needed.

He said: ‘I’m not really sure what my best position is.

‘I’ve played so many over the past five years.

‘At Tranmere I played mainly wide. At Burton I played a number of positions, including up front. I’ve never had a full season in one position

‘In a way it’s good because I know which positions to take up in every position.

‘Obviously, I’d want to be the main striker. I enjoy that role a lot, playing up top.

‘When you play that position you are judged on goals.

‘I like scoring goals and I’m confident I can do that.’

McGurk acknowledged he still has plenty to work on if he is to remain up front for Pompey.

He found himself dropping deeper at times on Saturday and covering for team-mates.

But the Ulsterman knows he has to remain a goal threat in the striker’s role.

‘I probably do too much at times. I think that may be down to playing so many positions,’ said McGurk.

‘Maybe I need to stay up there, be more selfish and get into positions to score goals.

‘I’m still learning even at the age of 26. I’m still learning all the time but it’s about the team.

‘If I need to drop back and make space for other people I will, I’m not a selfish player.

‘The manager asked me to just try and stretch them on Saturday. He wanted me to get between the centre-halves and get behind them.

‘I need to get into the box because maybe I come to the ball too much at times.

‘I need to get in the box and make sure there’s always a threat in behind.

‘That’s something I can work on.’
