Trevor Brock has branded Nigel Atangana the best player he has ever seen at Westleigh Park.

And he is backing Pompey’s newest recruit to make a big Football League impact.

The 24-year-old midfielder yesterday signed a two-year deal with the Blues for an undisclosed fee.

It brings an end to a Hawks career which saw him make 43 appearances and score five times during his one and only season at Westleigh Park.

Club director Brock has spent 32 years at the Hawks, going back to the Havant Town days.

In recent years he has seen a host of their players progress into the Football League, including Wes Fogden and Ollie Palmer.

And after watching every Atangana appearance for the Hawks, he has no doubts over the Frenchman’s quality.

‘Nigel is the best player I have ever had at Westleigh Park at this level of football,’ said Brock.

‘I have been associated there for 32 years and can tell you he is the real deal.

‘You look back at people like Wes Fogden, Mustafa Tiryaki, James Taylor and Timmy Hambley – we have had some decent players.

‘But I am comfortable in saying he is the best one of the lot.

‘Nigel’s got a fantastic engine and skills to match. He’s a terrific player all round who I think can go a lot higher than League Two – and Lee Bradbury does as well.

‘I have watched him every game, while somebody from Pompey must have been there 20-30 times last season. I know Andy (Awford) has been regularly, too.

‘Of course he is not going to be brilliant every game, that doesn’t happen in football, but he is a consistent eight out of 10 – and often a nine.

‘He will go further. Whether that is with Pompey I can’t predict, but he’ll go further.’
