Bexhill beaten in extra-time

In wet and windy conditions, the first half of the Sussex County Football League Division Two Challenge Cup first round tie was goalless after Steyning hit the post and Andy Garman had a shot well saved for Bexhill.

Although Bexhill had the strong wind at their backs during the second period, it was Steyning who took the lead with a long range free kick from Elliot Dawes.

Bexhill hit straight back via Josh Elliott-Noye’s fifth goal of the season from centre-half and despite both teams going for the win, there were no more goals in normal time so half-an-hour of extra-time was required.

Phil Williamson put Steyning in front again five minutes into the first period of extra-time and David Harris made it 3-1 soon afterwards. Bexhill kept pushing and hit the post in the second period, but it wasn’t to be.

The match originally took place on Saturday October 20, but was abandoned during the first half after an ambulance was called when Bexhill striker Casey Ham suffered a painful injury. Steyning led 2-0 at the time.

Closer to home, Hollington United retained the Hastings & District FA Veterans’ Cup after edging out Little Common 3-0 on penalties in the final at Sidley United FC.

The game itself had finished in a 3-3 draw after Hollington led 1-0 and trailed 3-1 before clawing their way back into it.
