Birch waiting to learn Lawrence Cardiff future

Pompey are anxiously waiting to see whether Liam Lawrence has a Cardiff future.

The midfielder enjoyed an impressive loan spell at the Bluebirds during the last three months of the campaign.

Lawrence finished the season strongly, despite Cardiff being knocked out of the play-off semi-finals by West Ham.

He started 14 of the 15 Cardiff matches he was available for, appearing as a substitute on the other occasion.

Pompey are desperate to off-load the 30-year-old, whose wages they cannot afford in League One.

But Trevor Birch has still to hear from Malky Mackay whether Cardiff will be taking up their option.

Pompey’s administrator said: ‘I can only assume Cardiff are still thinking about squads as I have not heard anything.

‘I would like to think they might be interested in him, but as it stands there has been no feedback. I’m still regularly speaking to his agent and just seeing how it goes.

‘Liam is still contracted to Cardiff until the end of May.

‘There is a lot of waiting at the moment, I’m afraid, while all clubs assess the future.

‘Hopefully he has impressed them and they will get back in touch to keep him.’

Birch last week told The News he expected Hayden Mullins to return to Pompey.

At that stage, Reading had not made any indication whether they wanted to keep him permanently following their promotion to the Premier League.

And the Royals are still to make an approach.

Stephen Henderson’s future is more clear cut.

He will complete a permanent move to West Ham after their play-off final against Blackpool.

The former Bristol City keeper is lined up for a switch regardless of the outcome.

Meanwhile, Erik Huseklepp is not expected to join Birmingham.

The Norwegian started just four matches at St Andrew’s and failed to make the squad for the play-off semi-finals as they lost out to Blackpool.
