Trevor Carson admitted his frustration at Pompey’s failure to discover a balance to their play.

But the keeper knows his team have to quickly find the tipping point between defensive solidity and cutting edge, if they are to pull clear of the League Two drop zone.

Richie Barker’s men have managed just a single shot on target from open play in their last two outings, as they prepare to go to Exeter.

Two goals at Morecambe showed attacking promise before those fixtures.

Defensive improvements have been a hallmark of Barker’s reign, with six goals shipped in the last eight games.

Now Carson knows the challenge is to get in right on both fronts to pull away from danger.

He said: ‘I’m one to look at the stats.

‘We always seem to be second best when it’s shots on goal and shots on target. If you don’t shoot you don’t score – that’s the same all over the place, not just strikers.

‘At home to Torquay you expect to have more than one shot on goal. The lads knew that after.

‘You can’t pinpoint training because the manager doesn’t neglect attacking. He’s a striker himself.

‘We are conceding less and now struggling at the other end.

‘It sort of sums our season up. We get one thing right and can’t get the other.

‘If you look at the stats, we aren’t conceding as many.

‘But you can’t see a good, solid clean sheet and us scoring three or four goals at the moment.

‘You can overthink things but we have to get the right balance.’
