Mark Catlin has lauded the ‘obvious’ choice of Andy Awford as Pompey boss.

Awford was yesterday appointed manager permanently following his outstanding second spell as caretaker.

The board and Fratton faithful have been overwhelming behind the 41-year-old getting the nod after preserving the club’s Football League status since stepping in five weeks ago.

As a result, the Pompey Academy manager had been long expected to be named at the helm, finally penning a 12-month rolling contract yesterday morning.

And according to the Blues’ chief executive, the decision was a no-brainer.

Catlin said: ‘I think it’s pretty obvious the reason why we appointed Andy.

‘He has come in and driven the club forwards and has great vision, while his man-management skill set is second to none.

‘Andy’s tactics and everything he has done to date has been superb, so the board took the decision that the right man was right under our noses.

‘He has done everything at this club and knows what it has been through in the recent past and it is important he gets the club in that aspect.

‘We are also impressed how he has a lot of really good ideas to take the club forward and build on the financial foundations currently in place.’

Pompey face Plymouth tomorrow as the curtain is brought down on the League Two campaign.

Following the final whistle, players and staff will take to the field to give a lap of appreciation in recognition of the tremendous support provided by the Fratton faithful this season.

The fixture is a sell-out, while Fratton has averaged 15,344 during its previous matches this season.
