Christian Burgess: Pompey's rivals are beatable

A 1-0 victory at Plymouth at the weekend prevented the second-placed side galloping further ahead in the race to escape League Two.

Yet tonight’s trip to Morecambe (7.45pm) represents one of their games in hand.

And Wycombe’s antics has demonstrated to Burgess that those ahead of them are still very much conquerable.

He said: ‘We have Morecambe tonight and then Leyton Orient, so have to take it a game at a time.

‘I know it’s a cliché, but I believe we can still do it, I believe that teams at the team won’t continue to win every game.

‘You have got to be patient and, as a team, be at it in every one of those games.

‘Northampton have done well, whether they can sustain it remains to be seen and they will have some tough games coming up as well.

‘We have to play Northampton and Plymouth at our place as well, so it should be a good run-in until the end of the season.

‘You look at Wycombe’s win at Plymouth at the weekend, that shows you they are not unbeatable.

‘There is still plenty of football, plenty of games, teams will obviously lose a couple of matches and you are back within a point and have to play them as well.

‘So it’s far from over.’

Luton entertaining Yeovil is the only other League Two fixture tonight.

It means victory for Cook’s troops will lift them into fourth spot, leapfrogging Bristol Rovers and Accrington.

Crucially, it would also put them within four points of third-placed Oxford United and with a better goal difference – albeit having fulfilled the same amount of fixtures.

The Blues have never before won at the Globe Arena, with two previous trips to consider.

In April 2015, Andy Awford left as Pompey manager following a 3-1 defeat at the Shrimps.

The match also marked Conor Chaplin’s first senior goal, climbing off the bench to net.
