The Hornets reached the semi-final of the league cup – also known as the Velocity Trophy – before the UK lockdown brought the football season to a halt.

They were due to play at home to Cheshunt in one semi-final while Bracknell and Folkestone were to play the other.

With only three games needed to complete the competition, Di Paola says he does not see why the trophy can’t be concluded as a curtain-raiser to the new season. There are precedents – the FA Cup is being played to a conclusion and the EFL Trophy final at Wembley between Portsmouth and Salford is also set to survive.

Di Paola said: “Obviously our leage season was made null and void and I think that was the right thing to do.

“But it would be great if we could try to finish the Veolcity Trophy.

“The club had never got that far in it before and it would be lovely for the fans if they still had that semi-final to look forward to. We’ll see if it happens.”
