JOE DEVERA admitted he’s playing for his Pompey future.

But the defender insists that has always been the case since moving to Fratton Park in 2013.

The way I look at it, every game I play for Pompey, I am playing for my career.

With his current two-year deal up in the summer, Devera is one of 14 players who face a nervous wait to see if they remain in Blues boss Andy Awford’s plans.

However, having established himself as one of three central defenders in Awford’s preferred 3-5-2 formation, the 28-year-old is keen to extend his stay on the south coast.

‘The way I look at it, every game I play for Pompey, I am playing for my career,’ said Devera.

‘That’s just how football is – you can have five years on your contract and still be in the shop window.

‘But I would like to be at Fratton Park next season. I am playing regularly, which is a positive, and we are doing well, which is another positive.

‘It is just a case of staying fit and staying in the team.’

Devera added he has enjoyed an ‘up-and-down’ stay at the Blues so far.

But the former Swindon ace believes there is unfinished business for both himself and the club in League Two.

‘I think it (my time at the club) has been up and down really,’ said Devera.

‘There have been some highs and lows.

‘I’ve picked up some injuries and had a few good spells also.

‘I would have liked to have had a good solid season fighting for the championship but it hasn’t worked out that way.’
