Elmer win the battle of the Sunday league 100 per cent record

LG United surrendered their proud 100 per cent home record to determined Elmer.

It looked as if it wouldn’t be the visitors’ day as they lost two players in the first ten minutes.

Steve Nanson was called on to replace Matt Hope, who had taken a nasty early blow to his ankle, and Kyle Belcher came on for an unwell Kainu Lewis.

The hosts, with their technical keep-it-on-the-ground style, caused Elmer a number of early scares but they were competently dealt with by man of the match Carl Lawrence in goal.

Elmer, with a 100 per cent record of their own to defend, gradually settled and clawed their way into the game and were handsomely rewarded as top scorer Nathan Sadler struck on 37 minutes when latching on to a tremendous ball from Craig Gardner.

Stung by this setback, it was to LG’s credit that they struck back immediately and equalised through Jamie Greenhill just three minutes later.

A combative second half saw Elmer needing to grind out a result against a committed and skilful LG, with the match decided by another goal from Sadler, in the 70th minute.

Burly striker Steve Nanson collected the ball on the right wing and swung in a delightful cross for the Elmer centre-forward to double his tally with a brave header which saw him collide with the home keeper Alex Brennan, who was unfortunately unable to continue.

The final 20 minutes saw Elmer’s defence hold firm, with a wonder save from Lawrence the highlight.

LG’s midfield collected two yellow cards and Elmer substitute Jack Davis saw a couple of great chances go begging.

Elmer return to cup action this week at Hillbarn Athletic in the Sussex Sunday Challenge Trophy.
