Pompey have been told to forget about their Swindon mauling.
Blues caretaker boss Guy Whittingham leads the troops into League One action at Walsall tonight in a televised clash, eager to see his men respond to the New Year’s Day battering at the County Ground.
And he is thankful that Pompey have a quick chance to respond.
Whittingham said: ‘You have to forget it. You have to put it in the past and you can’t dwell on things like that.
‘We did well for an hour, but we lost one goal and then lost another three in the next 10 minutes. The end result was horrible.
‘That’s why it helps that the next game comes around quickly because you have to concentrate on that.
‘It was very positive in training and we’ve come up with some ideas on how to cope with Walsall and how to give them a problem.’
Pompey have Paul Benson available again and Whittingham hinted that Pompey would be unlikely to stick with the wing-back formation they used at Swindon.
He said: ‘We try to play the best way we can set up against the opposition we are playing.
‘We are looking at Walsall on the best way to defend against them and the best way to get at them.
‘But you can talk about systems and tactics all you want.
‘First and foremost, the player has to go out there and give his all.’
